We all sometimes get stuck in a rut and want to do something creative with makeup, right ? Often we turn to YouTube to catch the latest trend or tutorial from our favorite beauty guru. But most of us forget that years and years ago all they used to teach makeup, was with books. So why not turn to one of those lovely fellas in need of inspiration. They might look old school but makeup books have beautiful illustrations and teach the important steps. Once you gathered enough knowledge you can change colors and textures to however you the look to turn out but master techniques like a pro!
1. Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual
This was my very first makeup book and I got it when it was on sale. It normally costs about 40$ but I think it’s worth every penny. Bobbi brown is know for its basic yet stunning looks so if you want to master the natural look this book is for you! It also helps you find the right products for you but only recommends Bobbi brown products. Of course they are biased this is their book haha.
2. Jemma Kidd Makeup Masterclass
This is another great book and not only talks about makeup itself but just like the Bobbi brown manual how to find the right shades and products for you but suggest more general products than specifying one brand. It may seem similar to the BB manual but it’s defiantly worth getting both. This one is a little more for advanced makeup lovers/artists and I feel like it could be the sequel to the Bobbi brown manual. It will help you get a better understanding what every product, every finish and every layer will do to your skin and overall look in general. Jemma Kidd will makeup own that everyday makeup like a queen.
2. Kevyn Aucoin: Making Faces
This one is defiantly more old school. Though it may seem boring to some it actually comes with a lot of knowledge and the owes that will always be important. With all these different trends and phases in the beauty world you will always need a book to teach you simple eyeliner and blush application tricks. So set a statement with doing something basic and out of this century using this book. Sometimes you need a little old school to master the easiest things.
4. Rae Morris: The ultimate makeup guide
This book has a lot of eyeshadow looks and picture by picture tutorial for basically every age, eye type and color which makes it so versitile. It also has color guides which helps you understand the different undertones and how skin and eye color can match your makeup. The eyes are defiantly the main part of the book but it also has chapters about how to pick the right foundation, colors and how to contour usin amazing graphics showing the before and after. Just like the Jemma Kidd and Kevyn Aucoin, the book does not recommend one specific brand or product (not like the Bobbi brown one) but teaches you the effect of color, formula, ingredients and finishes.
5. Miles of MAC
This is actually not a makeup manual but simply a collection of all MAC promo pictures for their limited edition collections. At first glance you’d think this wouldn’t teach you anything but if you try to recreate their pictures soon you will start to see a whole different world that is possible thanks to makeup. MAC is known for extreme makeup so why don’t give it a try and create something crazy for a change.
